A reliability-aware chance-constrained battery sizing method for island microgrid

Island Microgrids can coordinate local energy resources, provide post-fault reliability improvements for customers, and aggregate power resources to offer services the wider system. A crucial component of an Microgrid is battery storage system, which manage imbalances, alleviate constraints, improve by enabling islanding. planning sizing method required quantify maximize benefits while avoiding over-investment under-utilization. This paper combines comprehensive assessment with chance-constrained convex optimization, via second-order cone programming, optimally size within Microgrid. Chance constraints are applied state-of-charge avoid accommodate extreme cases uncertainty, uneconomic investment. The probability reaching a constraint also indicates likelihood that system will be unable facilitate island operation in event outage, affects reliability. demonstrated on real Austrian distribution network as part MERLON project. Results illustrate optimal trade-off identified between operating cost when violating chance 4.8%.
